Kadri, Mangalore

Kadri, a vibrant residential‑cum‑commercial locality in Mangaluru (Mangalore), Karnataka, is best known for its historic Kadri Manjunatha Temple, lush greenery, and its place in modern urban development. Located about 4 km from Mangalore city center, Kadri blends cultural heritage, green spaces, and urban growth into a unique neighbourhood. The Kadri Manjunatha Temple, perched on Kadri Hill, dates back to the 10th or 11th century and was reconstructed in stone during the 14th century. According to legend, Lord Parashurama created the site for penance, invoking Shiva to appear as Manjunatha, leading to the formation of seven sacred ponds or “theerthas”. One of the temple's crown jewels is the 1.5 m tall bronze statue of Lokeshwara (Brahma)—a rare example of ancient South Indian bronze craftsmanship, featuring three faces and six arms.
