Raj Wada, Indore

Rajwada, often referred to as Rajwada Palace, is a historic landmark located in the central part of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and stands as a key symbol of the city’s heritage. Built by Malhar Rao Holkar in the 18th century (around 1747), it served as the residence of the Holkar dynasty, who were prominent rulers of the Maratha Empire. The structure reflects a distinctive architectural fusion, combining Maratha, Mughal, and French influences. The front façade is particularly striking, featuring a grand wooden gateway (Darwaza) adorned with iron studs, leading into a large courtyard, while the upper floors were traditionally constructed using wood many parts of which have been restored after damage from fires and conflicts over the years. The area surrounding Rajwada is one of the busiest and most vibrant parts of Indore, functioning as a major commercial and cultural hub. It is closely connected to popular markets such as Khajuri Bazaar and the famous Sarafa Bazaar, which transforms into a renowned street food destination at night. The locality is well-connected to all parts of the city through major roads and public transport, making it easily accessible.
