Mugalivakkam is located at a distance of sixteen kilometres in the south west of Chennai precisely on the Guindy Mount Poonamallee road. Mugalivakkam is surrounded by Porur in the north, on the south and south east there is Meenambakkam, and on the north east there is Ramapuram. It is also well connected by railways and the nearest stations are at Guindy, Porur and Kathipara. There are the needed amenities like schools both CBSE and Tamil affiliated, health care centres and hospitals, financial institutions and banks. There are a large number of temples which is housed in Magalivakkam which are  Sri Ayyappan Temple, Maariamman Kovil, Ellaiamman Kovil, Panichathaman Kovil, Kesava Perumaal Temple etc.
