Virugambakkam, the western frontier of Chennai corporation was the home to some of the oldest film studios in the country. Now a days it is a well facilitated residential neighbourhood with a rich market, the Virugambakkam market, to the west, which is a a source of fresh vegetables .  Virugambakkam thrives amongst several educational institutions, hospitals and departmental stores. Though it is still known for its film studios, it also boasts first rate schools like St. Johns Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Vani Vidyalaya Senior Secondary & Junior College. No wonder it is a melting pot of religious harmony with its several temples, mosques and churches.
