Two Bihar questions had to be settled before the arithmetic was worth printing. The first was whether any Bihar instrument uses the word dismil. The answer is one glossary and nothing else, and the state's own current survey statute names no unit of area at all. The second was whether Bihar's katha and bigha convert cleanly into it, and that turned out to depend on which district you are standing in, in a way that divides the state in two. Both answers came from reading the instruments rather than the converters. Every figure was held as an exact fraction and rounded once, at printing; the checking script recomputes each district's bigha as a fraction of an acre and independently confirms which of them terminate.
A dismil is 435.6 square feet. It is a hundredth of an acre, and the acre is 43,560 square feet, so the figure is exact rather than rounded. Metric: 40.468564224 square metres.
In the units Bihar actually speaks, the answer depends on your district. In Patna and most of the state, 1 dismil = 0.32 katha = 6.4 dhur. In Chhapra a katha is 4 dismil, in Bettiah 7.5, in Hajipur and Motihari neither figure ever comes out even. Establish the district before you convert anything into katha. The table is here, and getting it wrong in Bettiah costs a factor of 2.4.

100 dismil make an acre, and one Patna bigha is 62.5 of them, because a Patna bigha is exactly five-eighths of an acre.
The word is spelled dismil in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and sometimes written decimil or dismal. All are the same unit, and so is the decimal your deed is likely to say. What no document anywhere says is dismil, with one exception.

Every one of the other thirty-two units has a section on this page. Where two units are the same area their table would be identical, so the second section points at the first rather than repeating it.
Every factor is a dismil's own size, 435.6 square feet, divided by the target unit's. To check any row by hand, take that number, divide, and compare.
Each one comes from a single anchor, the acre at 43,560 square feet, by exact fraction arithmetic. Where a factor recurs, the formula gives the fraction rather than a rounded decimal, because a rounded factor is a wrong instruction rather than an approximate one: the fraction is what has to be carried wherever the arithmetic must close.

A dismil, a decimal, a cent and a Bengali shatak are one area: a hundredth of an acre, 435.6 square feet. Nothing converts between them. Any calculator giving you different numbers for the four is wrong, and several do.
The words differ because the paperwork differs. Here is which word belongs to which desk:

If your document says decimals and your neighbour says dismil, you are both describing the same thing, which is the ordinary situation in Bihar and the subject of the next section. If your document comes from Bengal or Odisha, the instruments are filed under decimal; if from Kerala or Tamil Nadu, under cent.
Multiply by 435.6 for square feet. For Patna and most of Bihar, divide by 3.125 for katha and multiply by 6.4 for dhur, both exact, and the reason they are exact is the subject of a later section.

The katha and dhur columns above are Patna's. They hold for most of Bihar and for none of Bettiah, Chhapra, Hajipur or Motihari, check your district before using them. The square-foot and square-metre columns are safe everywhere, because the dismil itself does not vary.
The 62.5 row is a whole Patna bigha, and worth keeping as a landmark: eight Patna bighas are exactly five acres.

Divide by 435.6. The division rarely resolves (1,000 square feet is 2.295684… dismil and the digits do not stop), so carry the fraction and round once, at the end. The katha and dhur columns are here because a Bihar quote will usually come in one of those, not in square feet.
Millions of transactions in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh are negotiated in dismil. We went looking for the instrument behind the word, and found that there is very nearly nothing.
One government document uses the spelling. The Bihar Revenue Glossary, a bilingual public-facing list published by the state's revenue administration, carries this entry:
Dismil: "Metric land unit (~435.6 sq ft, equal to 1/100 acre)."
That is the only government text located anywhere using dismil. The same glossary, a few entries away, defines the acre:
Acre: "Standard land unit, equal to 100 decimals (43,560 sq ft)."
Read those two together and the glossary has quietly settled the question this page's readers most often ask. It uses dismil in one entry and decimals in the other, for the same fraction of the same unit, without remarking on it. They are the same word wearing different clothes, and Bihar's own revenue department treats them so.
The Bihar Special Survey and Settlement Act, 2011 is the law under which the state's ongoing re-survey is being conducted, the operation that will produce the khatiyan a Bihar holder relies on for the next generation. We searched its text for decimal, dismil, acre, hectare, katha, bigha, square metre and square feet.
None of them appears. The Act sets out procedure (who surveys, on what notice, with what appeals), and leaves the unit of area entirely to the rules and to practice. That is not unusual in Indian revenue legislation, but it is worth knowing before anyone tells you the dismil has statutory backing. It does not.
Eastern Uttar Pradesh says dismil as readily as Bihar does. Its statute does not. The Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, 2006 uses hectares throughout, and neither dismil nor decimal appears as a unit of area anywhere in it. Its own thresholds read like this:
Those are the numbers a khatauni is measured against, and not one of them is in a unit anyone in Ballia or Deoria would use in conversation. Converted into dismil, one of the three turns out to be a round figure in the units the region actually speaks, and a second lands close enough to look like one without being it, which is not claimed here.
The glossary calls the dismil a "Metric land unit." Its value is right to the last digit shown. The label is the one part of the entry that is not, and the error is a large one: a hundredth of an acre is about the least metric quantity in Indian land measurement. Its size runs back through the acre to the international foot of 0.3048 metre, which is why the exact metric value is 40.468564224 square metres, nine significant figures, none of them round. A genuinely metric unit of this size would be the are, and the are is 2.471054 dismil.
We record that because a reader who takes the label at face value will assume the dismil converts cleanly to hectares. It does not, and never will.
Bihar's bigha is not one size, which is well known. What follows from that, against the acre, is not.
The district katha values, and what attests each, are set out under that unit's own name. Ask a different question of them. How does each district's bigha sit against the acre?, and Bihar splits cleanly in two, along a line that decides whether your paperwork will ever reconcile. It is checkable with one division, and we have not found it stated anywhere.

Three of the five are simple fractions of an acre. A Patna bigha is five-eighths, a Chhapra bigha four-fifths, a Bettiah bigha three-halves. Every one of them converts to a whole or half number of dismil (62.5, 80, 150), and so does every katha beneath them: 3.125, 4, 7.5.
Two are not, and cannot be made so. Hajipur's bigha is 845⁄968 of an acre and Motihari's is 160⁄121. Both denominators carry 121, which is eleven squared, and no amount of rounding will turn either into a clean number of dismil. A Hajipur katha is 4.364669… dismil, going on for ever.
The reason is one factorisation, and it is worth setting out because it predicts the answer for any bigha you meet.
An acre is 43,560 square feet, which is 2³ × 3² × 5 × 11². The eleven-squared is there because the acre is measured with a 66-foot chain, and 66 is six elevens: an acre is 66 feet by 660.
A bigha therefore divides an acre into a terminating number of dismil only if the bigha's own square-foot figure also carries that 11². Otherwise the eleven-squared survives in the denominator, and a denominator of 121 can never produce a terminating decimal.

So the split is not regional temperament or surveying error. Three of these bighas were laid out with the chain the acre itself is measured by; two were laid out as plain squares of feet, 195 by 195 and 240 by 240, and no arithmetic will reconcile the second kind with the first.
The same test explains a unit far outside Bihar. A Kolkata cottah is 720 square feet (2⁴ × 3² × 5, with no eleven), which is why it comes to exactly 2⁄121 of an acre and why its figure in this unit never resolves. The Decimal page gives that figure; this is why it looks the way it does.
Where the chain is acre-based it stays exact at every step, which is unusual, the Biswa and Bigha pages show several chains that do not.

Twenty dhurki to the dhur, twenty dhur to the katha, twenty katha to the bigha: 8,000 dhurki to a bigha, and a dhurki is 0.0078125 dismil, which is one 128th, an exact binary fraction. The chain and the acre were built to fit.
Bihar writes an area as two quantities, and the second one is the dismil count. Here is the form as the Patna High Court used it in Smt. Baby Devi v. State of Bihar, decided 18 March 2024. The petitioner:
"claimed her right, title and possession over one acre and 60 ½ decimal of land of khesra no. 80"
That reads exactly as it looks: one acre, plus sixty and a half dismil. Not a decimal fraction of an acre. The acre and the dismil are stated side by side, like feet and inches.
The half is not a slip. Half a dismil is 217.8 square feet, and Bihar records areas to that precision routinely. It is worth noticing because it is finer than the resolution a cadastral map at 1:3960 can show, which is a distinction the Decimal page sets out in full.
The same judgment records nine plots the other way, as plain acre figures, with the dismil implied by the decimal places:
"khata No. 307 Khesra Nos. 96, 191, 192, 725, 245, 568, 567, 704 and 80 having area in acres and decimals as follows: 3.48, 2.83, 2.79, 7.45, 28.19, 1.59, 2.69, 2.30, 3.76 – total area 55.08 acres"
Those nine figures sum to exactly 55.08, and the total the court states is right. In dismil the same list is 348, 283, 279, 745, 2,819, 159, 269, 230 and 376, 5,508 dismil, and it adds without a remainder, because dismil are hundredths and hundredths add like ordinary decimals.
That is the practical advantage of this unit over the katha chain, and it is worth stating plainly: a list of dismil figures can be added straight down the column. A list of bigha-katha-dhur figures cannot, because it carries in twenties and every intermediate has to be regrouped.
Bihar writes "one acre and 60½ decimal", two quantities. Odisha writes "Ac.0.100 decimals": one figure, with the word trailing as a label. Both are lawful, both appear in High Court records, and each invites a different error:

A Bihar jamabandi does not give you a choice of unit. It gives you three at once.
The Indian Institute for Human Settlements, in Evaluation of Quality of Land Records: Bihar, a draft for discussion published on a Government of India domain, lists the fields a computerised Bihar Record of Rights contains. The area field reads:
"Rakba (Area of land parcel in acres, decimal and hectares)"
Three units, one parcel, one row. That is unusually generous, and it creates one problem worth anticipating.
The three fields will not agree to the last digit, and they cannot. An acre figure carried to two decimal places is a dismil count exactly. The hectare figure beside it is a conversion, and 0.01 acre is 0.004046856422… hectare, which does not terminate at any number of printed places. Whichever precision the hectare column is truncated to, it will read slightly low or slightly high against the acre column it was derived from.
So when the two disagree: the acre-and-decimal figure is the one to work from. It is the survey's own number, the hectare column is computed from it, and the conversion runs one way only. Convert from acres to hectares if you need metric, never back.

Bihar's own jamabandi prints a hectare column, so this table is the one a reader crosses between the two systems with. Note the 247 row: 247 dismil is 0.999574 hectare, the closest a whole number of dismil comes. The hectare itself is 247.1054 dismil and the are 2.471054, and no amount of surveying will ever make either of them tidy.
Crossing from the metric side, the three multipliers are 247.1054 for hectares, 2.471054 for ares and 0.0247105381 for square metres.
The Code states its limits in hectares. Here they are in dismil and in Patna katha, which is how they would actually be discussed:

Two of the three are worth a second look. The section 61(1) tank threshold, half an acre, is exactly 50 dismil and exactly 16 Patna katha, a round figure in both systems, which is what happens when a limit is set in acres. And the section 98(1) floor of 1.265 hectare comes to 100.028 Patna katha: within three-hundredths of a round hundred. We cannot show you a document saying the drafter had a hundred katha in mind, and we are not going to claim it. It is a coincidence worth noticing and nothing more.
Both columns below terminate: the dismil column and the Patna katha column alike. That follows from 435.6 and 1,361.25 being terminating decimals and the square foot being exactly 0.09290304 square metre. The katha column is given because a Bihar quote arrives in katha far more often than in dismil.

1. Using Patna's katha outside Patna. It is 3.125 dismil in Patna and most of the state, 4 in Chhapra, 7.5 in Bettiah, 4.364669… in Hajipur and 6.61157… in Motihari. A Bettiah plot quoted at "20 katha" is 150 dismil, exactly 2.4 times what the same words mean in Patna, where 20 katha is 62.5 dismil. This is the single most expensive error on this page, and no national converter warns about it.
2. Rounding a Hajipur or Motihari katha and then converting again. In those two districts no katha figure is exact in dismil, so a converted figure carries an error. Convert once, round once, and keep the square-foot value beside it as the number both parties can verify.
3. Trusting the hectare column against the acre column. A Bihar jamabandi prints both. The acre-and-decimal figure is the survey's; the hectare figure is derived from it and cannot terminate. Work from the acres.
The dismil itself is never the variable. It is 435.6 square feet everywhere, in every district, because it is a hundredth of an acre and an acre does not move. What varies in Bihar is the katha and the bigha sitting beside it, which is why every argument about area in this state is really an argument about which district's katha applies.
Establish the district before converting anything into katha. Not the district of the buyer, the seller or the broker. The district the land is in. Everything else on this page follows from that one fact, and getting it wrong is worth more than every rounding error combined.
When a document gives an acre figure and a katha figure that disagree, the acre figure is the record's. The katha is what the market added. In Patna, Chhapra and Bettiah they can be reconciled exactly; in Hajipur and Motihari they cannot, and the honest thing is to say so and compare square feet instead.
And if a document uses a different word (decimal, cent, shatak) the area is already identical. There is nothing to convert between them. What changes is the state and the paperwork, which is what the Decimal and Cent pages are for.
How many square feet is 1 dismil? 435.6 square feet, exactly one-hundredth of an acre. In metric, 40.468564224 square metres. In Patna katha, 0.32; in dhur, 6.4.
How many dismil in a katha? In a bigha? Does it depend on the district? It depends entirely on the district. In Patna and most of Bihar a katha is 3.125 dismil and a bigha is 62.5. In Chhapra a katha is 4 and a bigha 80. In Bettiah a katha is 7.5 and a bigha 150. In Hajipur it is 4.364669… and in Motihari 6.61157…, neither of which resolves. The table is above, and establishing your district is the first thing to do.
What does "1 acre 60½ decimal" mean? One acre plus sixty and a half dismil, 160.5 dismil altogether, or 69,913.8 square feet, or 1.605 acre. The two quantities are stated side by side, like feet and inches. Half a dismil is 217.8 square feet, and Bihar records to that precision routinely.
Is dismil the same as decimal, decimil, cent or shatak? Yes, all five name one area: a hundredth of an acre. Decimil and dismal are spellings of dismil. Decimal is what the documents write. Cent is the same area in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and shatak the same in Bengali. Nothing converts between them.
Does any Bihar law use the word? One government document does: the Bihar Revenue Glossary, which defines Dismil as "~435.6 sq ft, equal to 1/100 acre". No statute or rule uses that spelling, and the Bihar Special Survey and Settlement Act, 2011, under which the current re-survey is being conducted, names no unit of area at all. In Uttar Pradesh the Revenue Code, 2006 uses hectares throughout.
How many dismil in an acre? In a hectare? Exactly 100 in an acre. That is the definition of the unit. A hectare is 247.1054 dismil, which is not round and never will be, because hectares are built on the metre and dismil on the acre.
My khatauni in Uttar Pradesh is in hectares. How many dismil is that? Multiply by 247.1054. The Revenue Code's own limits work out at 1,245.4111 dismil for the 5.04-hectare acquisition ceiling and 312.5883 dismil for the 1.265-hectare floor a transferor must retain. The half-acre village-tank threshold in section 61(1) is exactly 50 dismil.
Why do different Bihar districts give different katha figures? Because the bigha they are twentieths of was laid out differently. Three district bighas were set against the acre (Patna at five-eighths, Chhapra at four-fifths, Bettiah at three-halves), and convert to dismil exactly. Two were set against a local gaz, and carry an eleven-squared in the denominator that no conversion will clear. The values themselves, and what attests each, belong to the bigha and the katha.

The district table is the part of this page most worth explaining. Each bigha's size comes from the Bigha and Katha pages, where it is attested; everything else in that table (the fraction of an acre, the dismil figures, and the verdict in the final column) is derived here, as a ratio of whole numbers, with no floating-point arithmetic anywhere on the page.
That derivation is machine-checked rather than trusted. The script tests each district's fraction independently and rejects the table if the last column disagrees with it; it also counts how many districts terminate and fails if the number is not the three this page claims, and checks that both non-terminating districts really do carry 121 in the denominator. Separately it re-adds the nine plot areas from the Patna judgment against the total the court states, confirms every figure quoted in the prose actually appears in the prose, and refuses to let this page assert anything the Cent or Decimal pages own.
Three pages in this series convert 435.6 square feet, and the division between them is by document, not by wording. Kerala's and Tamil Nadu's instruments belong to the Cent page.
